Plans

Fishing: The boat is chartered. It is 43 feet long and will accommodate up to 15 passengers/fisherpersons. It leaves Ilwaco promptly at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, August 6, and will return in 8 hours or when limited out—whichever comes first. Coffee, bait and tackle provided. Fishermen must bring lunch and cold drinks [Molly will see that there are sandwich fixings, cookies, chips, etc. so that lunches can be packed Sunday evening]. Beer is allowed on the boat but no hard liquor. We need to buy one-day licenses for everyone (except those who already have Oregon or Washington licenses with salmon tags). Fishermen should bring a jacket and/or rain gear and sun block, dark glasses etc.Il Waco harbor

Golf: Steve and Jan went to Long Beach to check out the golfing possibilities. There are two 9-hole courses. They felt Surfside was the more interesting and attractive of the two. Reservations for week-day tee times are only accepted a few days iin advance, So there is no hurry to determine how many golfers there will be or which days are best. Golf club rentals and power carts are available. (information updated 5/19/07)

Sight-seeing: Molly will organize trips to the following locations:

Fort Clatsop: The Lewis & Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1806 at Fort Clatsop, about 30 minutes south of Long Beach. The park at the site includes a replica of the fort and display center with information about the expedition and the native people encountered in the area. Our visit is planned for Wednesday morning, but could easily be rescheduled.http://www.nps.gov/lewi/Fort Clatsop in January

The Astor Column: Located atop the highest hill in Astoria, the Astor Column offers spectacular views of the mouth of the Columbia River (and is a great place to launch balsa wood gliders sold at the refreshment stand.)
The column displays 14 scenes commemorating important events in the history of Astoria in cronological order. The mural scrolls around the 125-foot-high structure in an upward spiral direction, with the earliest scene at the base of the column. An interior 164-step spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform at the top of the column. Our visit to the Astor Column could be combined with the trip to Fort Clatsop or happen Monday while the fishing party is out over the bar. We probably couldn’t identify their boat, but we could look.http://www.oregoncoast.com/astorcol/

Oysterville: This is a historic little town on Willapa Bay about 10 minutes north of the resort. The walking tour would be fun to do Thursday morning and we might include lunch at one of the restaurants there or in Nahcotta (also on Willapa Bay).

Sandcastle Building, Kite Flying, Beach sports: We will make sure there is a good supply of shovels, buckets, kites, balls, etc. for beach play. These activities will be available every day.

Swimming, hot tub: There is a public indoor pool near the resort where we can take the kids swimming. The resort has a hot tub but use is limited to adults. The ocean is very cold and has dangerous currents. Shallow wading is OK, but no one should be out more than knee deep.
